Furniture retailer IKEA releases a line of classics that have new customized version made by design firm Scholten & Baijings in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A video is part of the presentation and launch of the design collection. The music in the video is by an artist represented by Supervizion.
Scholten & Baijings
The Dutch pair Carole Baijings and Stefan Scholten met in 1999 and they are married since 2002. After having met on a personal level, they also developed a professional relationship and founded their design studio Scholten & Baijings together in 2000. Carole Baijings has more emphasis on the production and details of design, whereas Stefan Scholten gives more attention to the ideology of design.
Some of their previous design clients include Mini (BMW), Georg Jensen, and Herman Miller. Several of their works are found in the collections of design museums.
IKEA Lyskraft Design Collection Series
The design modifications includes new colors, patterns and textures. One of the classics is the “Klippan” sofa, it was first introduced in 1979 with original design by Lars Engman. The two seats Klippan sofa has received new quilted textile covers. A second classic is the “Poäng” armchair, which got new textil in eye-popping colors with coral, blue and bright yellow.
The name of the design line is “Lyskraft”, a Swedish word for “luminosity”. The collection also includes drinking glasses, a bowl, and trays. IKEA’s concept of inviting external designers to do remakes of their products is an homage to the creativity and DIY movement associated with its products.
The furniture reinterpreted by designers Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings will be available in limited edition and only in store (not online).
